A little help, please.

I've decided it's time to get some help around the house. No, I'm not going to hire a cleaning person. I'd love to, but I can't afford to maintain that with any regularity - and I can't manage to get things organized enough that a cleaning person would have a clue where to put anything away.

No, I'm talking about enlisting Sugar and the Bull in getting and keeping this apartment reasonably clean and neat. It really doesn't have to be that hard. We just have to stop giving in to the mentality that the place is too small and cluttered to keep clean.

I've managed to make a few changes to the kitchen that have made it much easier to keep in neat and to make it a room I no longer completely dread going into - though I still don't like to cook. That has encouraged me to believe that the same can happen with the rest of the apartment. And if we can get the whole place in order and keep it that way - then when we move to a bigger place, it will be that much easier.

But, for this plan to work, I realize that I have to create a list of regular chores that all of us are expected to do. I think part of the problem is that we just tackle areas when they get bad - rather than maintaining them. And then it turns into a battle of wills with the Bull and I each thinking that we do more work and the other one should handle this particular mess. And, of course Sugar assumes the Bull and I will take care of everything.

So, I want to make a list of tasks that needs to be done regularly and assign each of us to a set of tasks. That way there's no question about who should wash the dishes, or clean off the table, or clean the bathroom. We will have agreed on the chores and everyone will know who should do what.

Now, this might seem like a no-brainer to some people, but let's remember "My mother was a Playboy Bunny," so I don't have anyone to emulate about how a household should be run.

With that said, I need help making a list of chores. I'd like to separate it into things that should be done everyday, those that need to be done once a week, things to do monthly and the chores that need to happen a couple of times a year.

I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to taking care of a household. I actually was relatively neat when I was single. But treat me as though I know nothing. Please share with me the things you do daily, weekly, monthly, and 2 or 3 times a year to keep your homes fairly neat and clean.

Oh, and please don't suggest Fly Lady to me. I've tried her again and again and she just irritates me WAY too much for me to be able to learn anything from her.

Yeah, I couldn't get into FlyLady either. And I used to be maniacally neat, but um no longer. Who has time?

So, my "short list" of housecleaning is like this:

I try to clean the bathroom weekly. As in deepclean, sink/tub/toilet.

About once a month I clean the walls in the shower (my tiles are dark so it really has to be done otherwise it looks gross). But I have Clorox wipes in the bathroom and wipe down the toilet probably once a day. I have a boy... this is a "must".

I try to vacuum once a week. Should be more, what with the allergies and all.

Dishes done every day. Worst case--every other day.

Laundry once a week. I have my own washer... so I start doing loads on Wednesday night, cuz I HATE spending the weekend doing laundry.

I try to dust once a week. If I remember, it's more like once every two weeks. But dusting goes a long way to help with allergies and make stuff look clean.

I wash rugs about every other month. Including bathroom rugs.

I try to change sheets every other week. Sometimes every 3rd week. This is my least favorite chore, but a clean bed rocks.

1.every person washes the tub when they finish
2.every person clears and scrapes their own plate...someone wipes down the table have to find a place for everything (bins, bags, cabinets)and everyone is responsible for putting their own stuff away (with reminders of course)before they can pull out the next project...also when I had all the kids its easy if you have separate laundry bags...either separate yours from the girls, or separate it by color...
4.break the jobs into smaller jobs...i.e. one person washes the pots, while another washes the dishes and a third puts them away...this teaches cooperation again should be broken down in this person prepare (like sugar, she's old enough to wash and cut simple things, and spice can wash and "sort")
6. take the garbage out every day when you leave the house...I put it in front of the front door as a reminder...
7.before you go to bed make sure the kitchen is "complete"...garbage out, kitchen swept and dishes put away
8. before you leave the house make sure all items are put's depressing to come home to a messy house

1. pick a laundry day, and hell or high water stick to it...also you can chose a day when you wash the girls clothes and a day when you wash you and bulls clothes...MMB washes on wed and I wash on thurs or sun
2. once a week the bathroom must be swept out and mopped, toilet cleaned (complete...behind and under)and sink washed down.
3.pick a day when you sweep and mop the entire house...again break down into smaller sweep, one pick up the dirt, and one mop...
4.I go food shopping on I put away the food, clean and season the meat and put it individually in baggies so all I have to do is thaw it out and pop it in the oven...makes dinner easier and cuts down when folks want different things...
5.stick to your task...bearmaiden gets pissed cause I don't do anything till the house is finished...must faster now that it's just me and MMB...

every two weeks I wash the sheets and about once a month I wash the blankets...I wash other rugs about once a month...

it's a short list, and I will add more when I think of it...

and bottom line, you and bearmaiden have to go to sleep at night...once you adjust you wont be so tired and will be able to organize your day and accomplish all...

I've already gave you my list. My friend R, has her two boys: 10 and 8 sweep and mop, do dishes, fold and take care of clothes, and clean their room.

Also I forgot to mention that I do use that daily shower spray which works great.
