Vote for Human Milk Bank

The Lactivist posted on her blog about an organization that is holding an event - the proceeds of which will go to the charity that wins the most votes by midnight tonight. One of the contending charities is the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). HMBANA "is a multidisciplinary group of health care providers that promotes, protects, and supports donor milk banking." Some of the more common reason human donor milk is prescribed include:

  • Prematurity
  • Allergies
  • Feeding/formula intolerance
  • Immunologic deficiencies
  • Post-operative nutrition
  • Infectious diseases
  • Inborn errors of metabolism
In a society where formula has been the norm for so long, many people really aren't aware of all the benefits of human milk. But the need for donor milk exists and many babies are healthier because of these milk banks.

So please go and vote for HMBANA to be the benefitting charity.

That's my standard line when people tell me that Spice should stop nursing and start drinking cow's milk. It amazes me that we've gotten to the point where people really believe that the milk of another animal is more appropriate for children than human milk.
